Ebook Pricing

You have finally finished your masterpiece, and now you are ready to share it with the world. But at what price?

At Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and most of the other retailers, you will earn 70% of your sale price if you upload your work directly to their sites at $2.99 or more. If you price it less than that, you earn only 35%. Yes, you make just over a quarter if you sell a 99 cent ebook. But authors do it to market their material, and to gain readership.

Amanda Hocking has her first book in her Trylle series for sale at 99 cents and the rest at higher price points, usually $2.99. Joe Konrath has most of his books priced at $2.99, but he offers sales where he lowers the price to 99 cents for a limited time.

If you are thinking that those price points seem low, remember that you are competing with a lot of other content, which is also priced competitively.

The prices and percentages above are for ebooks that you upload directly to a retailer's site. If you use an aggregator, they may take a cut of your sales--most do. Read the Aggregator page for details.
